Rodel Buban’s Intense Passion

Posted on Feb 11 2010 by owie

Intense Passion is Rodel Buban’s latest set of paintings which express what God has put in his heart. After 4-5 months and a few years, Rodel Buban has finally launched his first solo exhibit at My Little Art Place!

Listeners of the Edge would recognize him as the vocalist of the band “Rodel Buban and the Overflow.” That’s how I met him! Little did I (and a lot of people) know, Rodel was a painter long before he was a singer! Since Rodel Buban is a pastor too, he usually paints on a Monday, which is his rest day. He starts at about 10 in the morning and paints away `til about 5 in the afternoon. Being the passionate singer and worshiper that he is, it’s not a surprise that Rodel Buban listens to praise and worship songs while painting. “Splendour”, was inspired by the song “Indescribable” by Chris Tomlin. It clearly speaks of God’s creation — extremely colorful!

Splendour by Rodel Buban

I was able to check out the exhibit a day before they had to pull out, so don’t go rushing to My Little Art Place now to see the rest of Rodel Buban’s paintings! I’m just stopping you `coz “Splendour” is enough to get you out of your seat and check out the rest of his paintings up close! For now, you can sit back, relax, and allow me to take you on a short virtual tour (with inside stories) of “Intense Passion”

New Season by Rodel Buban

“New Season” is a prophetic painting. Rodel Buban believes that 2010 will be a year of breakthroughs! This painting encourages us that Jesus is the vine and we are the branches and as we continue to have an intimate relationship with him, we will definitely be fruitful! Here’s an inside story behind this painting: Rodel Buban was crying as he was painting “New Season”

A Mans Heart by Rodel Buban

“A Man’s Heart” according to Rodel Buban, is almost everyone’s favorite. This is based on Matthew 13:1-22, where Jesus said (The Message version) :

“What do you make of this? A farmer planted seed. As he scattered the seed, some of it fell on the road, and birds ate it. Some fell in the gravel; it sprouted quickly but didn’t put down roots, so when the sun came up it withered just as quickly. Some fell in the weeds; as it came up, it was strangled by the weeds. Some fell on good earth, and produced a harvest beyond his wildest dreams.”

Fruitfulness by Rodel Buban

Every time I look at a set of paintings, I always make it a point to choose my favorite piece. In this particular exhibit, it really took me a while to make my pick. A number of Rodel Buban’s paintings really spoke to me, but the painting that really hit home for me was “Fruitfulness.” Aside from the fact that lately I am drawn to “dots”, there was just something about this piece that drew me to it more than the others! I told Rodel Buban, that if I could actually write a cheque and buy this piece from him, I would! But for now…we’ll have to pray for that cheque!  “Fruitfulness” is based on Matthew 4:19 where Jesus first called his disciples and said “Come follow me, and I will make you fishers of men”

Fruitfulness

The highest priced piece in this set is “Harvest.” Rodel and his two sons David and Jonathan, who were then 4 and 5 years old, collaborated to come up with this painting. Since this painting is very dear to Rodel Buban’s heart because it’s the product of one of their father and son bonding times, he said this painting is priceless. However, if someone really wants to buy it, he’d gladly sell it for PhP500,000.

Harvest by Rodel, David and Jonathan Buban

If you’ve noticed, Rodel Buban used a lot of red in this collection. He said it represents Jesus’s blood, God’s love and the fire, the passion the Lord has put in his heart. As I was looking through all of Rodel Buban’s paintings, I could really feel such an intense passion for what he was doing, which ironically is the title of the ‘carrying single’ (if it were an album) of this exhibit…

Intense Passion by Rodel Buban

While we’re waiting for Rodel Buban’s next solo exhibit (he’s aiming for at least two more this year!!! woohoo!), you can look for “Buban’s Art” on facebook to get in touch with him and to check out his latest masterpiece `coz he regularly uploads photos of his painting there! Meanwhile, here are a few more pieces from the “Intense Passion” exhibit. I’m sure you’d agree with me that they are absolutely beautiful!

On CAM featuring Francesca Battistelli and her Someday Very Soon

Posted on Jan 21 2010 by owie

franchesca_bI’m writing this blog specifically to those who are single and praying for someone, specially the ladies! Here on C.A.M. we don’t just feature the artists’ music, but we also want to put the spotlight on their stories too! This week we’re featuring singer/songwriter Francesca Battistelli and her song “Someday Soon”

I first heard Francesca Battistelli’s “I’m Letting Go” on The Edge and after that, I got hooked, to her music and her story. Digging deeper I got to listen to all of the songs from her “My Paper Heart” album and I have to say that if I could play her album on repeat the WHOLE DAY, I would!  And well, I’d also play her song “Someday Soon” on repeat a lot too! (just like it’s been playing on repeat for the past hour or so!)

So that we’re on the same page, click here, so that you can listen to the song, as you read this blog!

Yes, being the dreamy girl that I am, this song was really spot on!  Specially the part where it goes…

Someday falling in love with you
Holding your hand
Making our plans all come true
Someday under a sky so blue
I’ll give you my heart
Our story will start someday soon

I wanna be the one who does everything with you
Watching stars, washing cars, taking walks, going to the store
I wanna be the one who gets to change her last name someday
To something that sounds something more like yours

*Be right back. I’m on my way to la la land!*

OK, I’m back! Haha! But seriously, I’m not just sharing this song because I’m all dreamy. I also want to share her love story too, `coz it’s really encouraging!

One of our volunteers at The Edge is really into Francesca Battistelli’s music too, and she’s the type who’d research about the artists more than I would, and I’m glad she’s like that! Coz she’s the one who told me that Francesca Battistelli got engaged! Being the Fran fan that I am, I looked it up right away…and this is what I found:

Francesca Battistelli and Matthew Goodwin (photo from Godbeat.com)

SOMEDAY VERY SOON…

Well well well. There is so much I want to say about the recent events in my life. I don’t even know where to begin! Matthew Goodwin came into my life last September, though I didn’t know then that he would become the man I’d marry. In late summer, he will be my husband! I am beyond thrilled and so incredibly excited about what God has in store. It’s funny–things don’t typically turn out exactly as planned, but if you live a life of obedience to God and trust Him even when you can’t see the promise being fulfilled, He will fulfill it in due season. And He makes all things work together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purposes (Romans 8:28).

Matt and I met on the NewSong fall tour last September, but we didn’t spend much time together. I remember thinking, “gosh, he’s on his computer a lot.” I thought he was just a computer nerd, but come to find out he is getting His master’s degree in theological studies online through Liberty University. I learned that one quiet afternoon on the Winter Jam tour in a green room in Ohio, when he and I had one of our first good talks. I was very impressed.

He asked me for my number the day before the Super Bowl, and used it the very next day to text me during the game. He began finding reasons to text me more and more, and by the time he bought me a CD of an artist I mentioned liking in passing, I knew something was up. In fact, he had been pursuing me since the beginning of the tour, but I just hadn’t caught on. So he likes to say he’s been dating me longer than I’ve been dating him! :)

Anyway, we had our first date in South Carolina, and from then on I asked God very specific questions about him and got very specific answers. I kept my heart guarded until he laid his out, and by then I knew. I knew he was my Someday Soon.

Be encouraged that God knows the desires of your heart, and He longs to give them to you. Keep everything in your heart open to Him, and allow Him to change your heart if need be. Trust me, His redemption power is incredible, and true love is really the sweetest thing in the whole world. I am blessed beyond words!

Love, Francesca

(lifted from http://www.francescamusic.com)

After reading that, I hope now you know why we’re featuring Francesca Battistelli this week! With Valentine’s day a few weeks away and people already talking about it, this may be that encouragement you’ve been praying for!

Francesca Battistelli updates her site quite often and writes blogs too. So to be encouraged even more by this awesome singer/songwriter, you may visit www.francescamusic.com

Drummer Adrian Fullon Passes On

Secret Soldier for God, Adrian Fullon, RIP

Secret Soldier for God, Adrian Fullon, Sept 8, 1979 - Jan 11, 2010

VIEWING: Thursday, January 14: 10am onwards, Arlington Chapel, C. Raymundo-Rotonda Area, Pasig City

INTERMENT/CREMATION: Sunday, January 17: The Heritage Park Cemetery, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City

The Edge Team bids goodbye to a good friend in Christ and ‘Secret Soldier’ Adrian Fullon. He passed on at the age of 31 last Monday, January 11, 2010 at 3 in the afternoon after a serious asthma attack which resulted in cardiac arrest.

Adrian Fullon was a drummer who played for many Christian artists like Jen Someone, Acel Bisa Van Ommen and Verona. He also played the drums in Kids Church at Victory Christian Fellowship at The Fort in Taguig.

He often referred to himself as the Secret Soldier and if you visit his Multiply site the following verses grace the front page:

” O Lord, I say to you, ” You are my God.” Hear, O Lord, my cry for mercy. O Sovereign Lord, my strong deliverer, who shields my head in the day of battle—- Psalm 140:6-7

” The Lord will march out like a mighty man, like a warrior he will stir up his zeal; with a shout he will raise the battle cry and will triumph over his enemies.” ——–Isaiah 42:13

I heard the shocking news first from Owie Burns of the Edge Team just a couple hours after Adrian Fullon died and as soon as she told me, I saw a vision of him with a little smile on his face. It was all in my head but I could see him clearly; his long shiny hair, black as midnight and his full cheeks even rounder thanks to the smile.

But When Ron, our boss at the Edge showed me Adrian Fullon’s Facebook site, I started to cry because that was when it hit me: the quiet ‘soldier’ guy who made everyone feel safe with his presence was gone.

Adrian Fullon in the center with friends at a VCF gathering

Adrian Fullon first walked into our lives when he joined the Bible Study group of Michael Turner, lead vocalist of Battery – a band that became popular in Metro Manila in the late 90s for it’s old school heavy rock sound and Jesus lyrics.

Adrian Fullon and another guy named Warren (known for his multi-body-piercings and love for Jesus) who were Michael’s first ‘kids’. Since I was part of Michael Turner’s Bible group, I got to know Adrian in his early days some 12 years ago when he was a teenager desperately seeking God.

Even in those days Adrian Fullon struggled with severe asthma. One of his most serious attacks happened two years ago. He was hospitalized for a few days in Medical City and at the time, he reportedly told some people that the asthma was so bad he thought he was going to die.

Unfortunately, last Monday, those words came true. According to drummer Sandy Baliong, one of Adrian’s good friends, nobody took his asthma attack that day too seriously. Even Adrian thought it was just one of his typical attacks. So by the time he realized it was a bad one, it was too late. Neighbors rushed him to Medical City but on the way to the hospital as they were crossing the Pasig floodgate, Adrian Fullon breathed his last.

When they finally got him to the hospital, paramedics tried for 30 minutes to resuscitate him but to no avail. When his closest friends rushed to Medical City, they found Adrian Fullon on a gurney, covered with a sheet and lifeless.

After the initial shock had worn off, his friends suddenly remembered that Adrian Fullon’s Facebook status last week said: Hello to Heaven. Could he have sensed that it was ‘his time’? Or was it just a coincidence?

Whatever the case, one thing is for sure. Adrian Fullon may have been walking this earth but his eyes and heart belonged to the home of God’s angels.

According to Sandy, one of Adrian’s dreams was to visit Jerusalem, to walk the paths that Jesus once walked over two thousand years ago. I believe his dream has come true. Adrian Fullon is now walking in New Jerusalem but not alone. He’s side by side with his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Goodbye Secret Soldier. You will ever be our strong and faithful warrior.

Im awake now..and Adrian is still dead..but i was told that Adrian’s death..the death of someone who loved Jesus wholehaertedly is one of the most beautiful and sweetest things you’ll ever encounter..Man..We will never be the same again. —– Facebook status of Adrian Fullon’s best friend Dennis Llante

Seven Pop Songs to Ponder!

Posted on Jan 7 2010 by owie

blog by Liz Claudio

This week, I’m taking a break from blogging about Christian Artists and Musicians, and instead, I’m going to be blogging simply about music. Pop music, that is.

A month ago, one of my pastors shared a funny observation during a preaching. He said that if you were in love with another person, you could taint every praise and worship song and end up dedicating it to the object of your affection. For instance, in church, you could be belting out “All I need is youuuu…”, while facing your crush the whole time. It sounds silly, but it does happen to some people!

On the other hand, my pastor said, if you were so in love with God, you could be a singing a secular song and you could be singing it for God. The example he gave: “I want nobody, nobody but you…” Funny, and yet so true!

I’m a huge fan of praise and worship music and contemporary Christian music. I listen to that stuff all the time, and when I like a song (whether it’s a P&W/CCM song or not), I can play it endlessly for a month. And then my ears start bleeding. Not really, but I think you know what I mean. So last week, I decided to give myself a break from my usual P&W/CCM fare, and I opted to listen to some pop music so I could test my pastor’s theory. I went through my iTunes Library and some online music charts, and here’s what I found: sure, there’s a lot of trash out there on the radio now, but there are also some gems in the rough if you keep your mind open! And over here at The Edge, we’re all about positive music, so I decided to share with you some of the songs I placed in what I like to call my Pop Songs to Ponder playlist!

But first, I must issue a disclaimer: be sure to put aside personal opinions and biases against these pop stars (and pop music too). Remember, some of these songs weren’t really written by these artists, so if you just give the songs and the lyrics a chance (especially in the light of the theory I mentioned above), you might end up liking them! I’m not really a pop music fan, but hey, when you’re in love [with God], you can’t help but sing out loud!

So here we go (in no particular order):

1. “No Air” – Glee Cast (Glee – The Music, Volume 1)

  • The original version was sung by Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown, but I personally like this version better. I listen to this when I’m enjoying a morning run.
  • The lines to sing out loud: “Tell me how I’m supposed to breathe with no air?/Can’t live, can’t breathe with no air/It’s how I feel whenever you ain’t there/There’s no air, no air”
The cast of Glee (photo from gleefansite.com)

2. Gotta Find You” – Joe Jonas (Camp Rock – Music from the Disney Channel Original Movie)

  • It doesn’t get more pop than something from one of the Jonas Brothers. But listen to the song and you’ll get why it’s on the list.
  • The lines to sing out loud: “I need to try to get to where you are/Could it be, you’re not that far?”
Kris Allen

Kris Allen

3. “Live Like We’re Dying” – Kris Allen (from his self-titled album)

  • Quite frankly, I’m not a regular American Idol fan, but the single from this AI champ got my attention.
  • The lines to sing out loud: “Sometimes we fall down, can’t get back up/We’re hiding behind skin that’s too tough/How come we don’t say I love you enough?/‘Til it’s too late, it’s not too late”

4. “Smile” – Uncle Kracker (Happy Hour)

  • I first discovered this on the iTunes Music Store. It’s one of those songs that put you in a happy mood.
  • The lines to sing out loud: “Don’t know how I lived without you/Cuz everytime that I get around you/I see the best of me inside your eyes”

5. “1234” – Plain White T’s (Big Bad World)

  • It’s a simple, catchy, and cute love song.
  • The lines to sing out loud: “Give me more loving than I’ve ever had/Make me feel better when I’m feeling sad/Tell me I’m special even though I know I’m not/Make me feel good when I hurt so bad/Barely getting mad/I’m so glad I found you/I love being around you”

6. The Climb” – Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana: The Movie – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

  • I must correct myself. Nothing is more ‘pop’ than something from tween queen Miley Cyrus. Lyrics-wise, I have to say that this is one of the best songs I’ve heard all year.
  • The lines to sing out loud: The whole song deserves to be sung out loud (just ask all the girls lined up at the American Idol auditions), but my favorite lines are the ones that makes the song stellar – “There’s always gonna be another mountain/I’m always gonna wanna make it move/Always gonna be an uphill battle/Sometimes I’m gonna have to lose/Ain’t about how fast I get there/Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side/It’s the climb”
hannah-montana

Miley Cyrus

7. “Halo/Walking on Sunshine” – Glee Cast (Glee – The Music, Volume 1)

  • You could go for the original version of “Halo” by Beyonce, but there’s something potent about a mash-up that includes the ultimate happy song, “Walking on Sunshine”. Best appreciated if you’re a Gleek.
  • The lines to sing out loud: “Everywhere I’m looking now/I’m surrounded by your embrace/Baby I can see your halo/You know you’re my saving grace/You’re everything I need and more”

So far, I’ve got 7 songs, and I’m hoping to add 3 more to my list. Any other suggestions? :-) Happy listening!

Imagine this, you’re at a cafe, the garden area, so you can enjoy the sun plus a bit of breeze as you sip your favorite cup of coffee as you read your favorite book, or better yet, your Bible. What’s missing? Good music to go along with this oh so picture perfect scene. Point of the story is: I’ve got the artist to complete this picture (and loads of other pictures, of course!)

Silverfilter

Silverfilter

SILVERFILTER is a Producer. Musician. Remixer. Composer. Arranger. Live Electronic Artist.

He describes his music this way:

Each performance I do is played live and it is more like semi composing on the spot as I sequence on the fly, add effects, pull out instruments, etc. This sets us apart from the usual DJ sets because we try to push our own material… let’s say we do electronic OPM :)  (There’s a growing community of electronic artists over at electronicamanila.org in case anyone’s interested to join.)

Most of Silverfilter’s tracks don’t have words to it, but he amazingly gets the message of the song across. I was actually listening to his latest album “Devotion” as I was reading the story of the birth of Jesus. The track was just so perfect as I was reading, that I had to see what track was playing. Would you believe me if I said “In a Manger” was playing? Trust me when I say — it was such a perfect soundtrack!

I asked Silverfilter about his newest album “Devotion” and this is what he has to say:

(It) simply was a God idea when it simply came to me when the expansion of our church was announced. I felt that what better way to give back to God but to give of my talents and abilities not only to play for Him but to raise funds in the expansion of His church! That’s the main idea behind it. Then I simply went with a sound that could be played while reading the bible or meditating on the Word.

devotion-cover-smallYou can get a copy of his album on Itunes (visit www.silverfilter.com for the direct link), at the boutique in Cafe Saguijo in Makati, Route 196 in Katipunan, Whitebox Studio in Cubao X or you can check out his live performances and buy a copy of the album from him! Just look him up on Facebook and Twitter and you’ll know where he’ll be!

Silverfilter’s been experimenting a lot with his music and there’s just so much to say, simply coz he’s done so much! In fact, it’s far better to check out his home on web to know more about him, and yes, to listen to his tracks too! You can check him out on www.silverfilter.com. If you think you know exactly what kind of tracks to expect, think again! Be prepared to be surprised :)

All we wanted to do was to tell you guys a bit about him, now that you’re all intrigued about him, enjoy his music!!!

There is a mighty storm brewing Down Under, and its named PLANETSHAKERS, but instead of hail, water or wind, it brings with it a heart that hails praises for its King, the cleansing water of praise & worship that brings refreshing to any tired and burnt out soul, and a mighty wind of revival that aims to sweep Christian congregations the world over.

“When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:17-20

Originating from Paradise Community Church in South Australia, the unassuming worship team that was awed at the presence of 300 attendees to their teen conference way back in 1997, to a crowd of 20,000 faithful in 2007, from the original 5 member team to its current 18 members, PLANETSHAKERS, took the great commission and took it a notch higher. By combining awesome music with compelling messages given by powerful people of God.

Julianne at the Awit Awards

Julianne at the Awit Awards

Almost every musician shares this dream: touring the world, performing in front of eager crowds, selling out albums, and gaining new fans. Filipino singer/songwriter Julianne gets to live out that dream, and it comes with meaningful perks. Having the privilege of traveling to perform her music is something she considers to be a huge blessing, but each day that she gets to inspire, comfort, or uplift audience members through her songs, it’s a happy day at work.

2009 has been a big year for Julianne. Coming off two big wins at last year’s Awit Awards (the Philippines’ version of  the Grammy Awards, where she took home the awards for Best New Female Recording Artist and Best Performance by a Female Recording Artist), she started writing and recording new songs for a follow-up to her debut album, Grateful.

Mosaic Music Festival

Mosaic Music Festival

Last March, she was one of the performers that represented the Philippines at Singapore’s annual Mosaic Music Festival, which also featured international acts like N.E.R.D., Indigo Girls, and Brian McKnight, among others.

Julianne recently returned from the Sing Out Asia 2009 tour, which took her to Jakarta, Indonesia, and Okinawa, Japan. Sing Out Asia (SOA) is a non-profit organization that desires to see the youth in Asia united in hearts, and solving problems like poverty, discrimination, corruption, drug use, environmental pollution TOGETHER. SOA brings a group of artists from Asia that travel around together with a leadership training camp to foster friendship and trust among the Asian youth.

Last week, I sat down and caught up with Julianne to find out more about her latest ‘adventure’.

Q: This was the second time you’ve gone on a Sing Out Asia tour. How did you feel about this time around?
JULIANNE: I really enjoyed this time around. Not to mention, I was able to travel two countries in one month. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would be able to to do that. God’s favor and blessing! I knew God revealed to me that, more than speaking through song and music, sharing my life was a way to minister to people–to bless them through friendship and by the way you live your life. This doesn’t necessarily happen in a snap–it takes time to build friendships.

Q: What would you consider to be the highlight of this tour for you?
JULIANNE: One highlight was meeting this girl who approached me in tears, thanking me for sharing the gift of music with her. She said that my song, “Grateful,” touched her heart, and she said its like she heard God’s voice speaking to her. I am always in awe of how God works and sings through me. I am without words in thankfulness, and I am humbled that God uses this song to touch other people hearts.

If you haven’t watched a performance by Julianne, we suggest you catch her while you still can! With her undeniable talent and sense of purpose, we know it’s only a matter of time until she goes beyond Asia’s borders and blesses the rest of the world with her music.
